Government Gas Assistance Programs Explained

Updated Reviewed by the Free Gas Cards Foundation assistance teamSources cited

There is no single federal "free gas card" program. Government help with gas comes through Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation, VA travel pay, TANF emergency assistance, workforce (WIOA) supportive services, and occasional state gas rebates. Charities and organizations like ours fill the gap with free gas cards.

Government programs that can pay for gas

  • Medicaid NEMT: rides, bus passes or mileage reimbursement for medical appointments.
  • VA Beneficiary Travel: mileage reimbursement for eligible veterans traveling to VA care.
  • TANF: some states use TANF emergency or work-support funds for gas and car repairs.
  • WIOA supportive services: American Job Centers can help with transportation costs during training.
  • State rebates: some states have sent one-time gas or inflation relief payments.

Is there a government free gas card?

No. Be careful with ads promising a "government gas card" or "gas stimulus check" for a fee, because these are common scams. See our scam warning guide.

What about LIHEAP?

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps with home heating and cooling bills, not car gasoline. Lowering your utility bill with LIHEAP can still free up money for fuel. Your state guide lists your energy assistance office.

How to apply

Contact your county human services office for TANF and Medicaid, the VA for travel pay, and an American Job Center for workforce help. You can also apply for a free gas card with us at the same time.
