Free iPad From the Government: Myths and Real Options

Updated Reviewed by the Free Gas Cards Foundation assistance teamSources cited

There is no federal program that gives free iPads to the public. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which offered a one-time discount of up to $100 on a laptop, tablet or desktop, stopped enrolling in February 2024 and ended on June 1, 2024 when its funding ran out. Legitimate ways to get an iPad at low or no cost include school device programs, library lending, certified refurbished iPads, disability and assistive-technology programs, and occasional provider promotions.

Why "free government iPad" ads are misleading

Many ads still use ACP-era wording or are lead-generation pages that collect personal data. A real program will name its sponsor, show eligibility rules and never ask for an upfront payment.

Real ways to get a low-cost iPad

  • Schools: many districts issue iPads to students.
  • Libraries: some lend iPads with internet hotspots.
  • Assistive technology programs: state AT programs may lend or fund iPads for people with disabilities who need them for communication.
  • Certified refurbished iPads from reputable sellers cost much less than new.
  • Lifeline provider promotions: occasionally include tablets; read the terms carefully.

Who may qualify

  • Household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guideline, or
  • Someone in the household receives SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit
  • On tribal lands, certain tribal programs also qualify (Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribal TANF, FDPIR, tribal Head Start)
  • Only one Lifeline benefit (for Lifeline-based offers) per household

Protect yourself

Never pay a fee or share bank details to claim a "free" device. See our scam warning guide, and learn how to verify a legitimate organization.
